Should a cowboy hat match the colors of your belt and boots?

For example, can a black cowboy hat only go with black belts and boots, or can the black hat go with brown boots and shoes? Is the color matching only for the belt and boots?

I think that accessories that are to "matchy matchy" look like you’re trying too hard. I like to mix it up. Just make sure the styles match (like a casual belt and hat with casual shoes). A fancy hat and beat-up shoes might not match so good.
