I am trying to remember the name of a 1930s book about a wild horse and a cowboy that became friends.

After many years the cowboy retired and the horse returned to the wild. I am looking for the name of the horse which is also the name of the book.

This may not be the answer you’re looking for, but I think it’s worth telling. When I was in elementary school, I remember reading Smoky, the Cow Horse, by Will James. I loved this book and on occasion, still think about it. This book was published in the 1920s. In the book, the cowboy called this gray horse a mouse-colored horse. The book covers the horse’s life from the time he is tamed by the cowboy and then stolen, until he is found years later by the same cowboy.

Was it by chance "Brighty of the Grand Canyon" by Marguerite Henry?
I read the book when I was quite young but I think that was the general plot of the book.
