Like those books written in the 50s, when the ‘Cowboy-Indian’ craze was still around? With a typical hero/damsel in distress plot?

Well, have you ever read any of Janette Oke’s books? I have never read any of her stuff, but I have read reviews and seen some of the Hallmark movies based on her books, and they seem like the possible western/frontier books you are looking for.
Janette Oke has series called Love Comes Softly, A Prairie Legacy, and many more series and books about the frontier and western times. I have heard some pretty good things about those books. Below I have attached a link to Janette Oke’s site – on this page you will find a list of her series and books, and it includes a brief description of each series.
Best wishes!
