I am currently working my way through all of Cormac McCarthy’s books but unfortunately there aren’t enough of them! I really enjoyed the Border Trilogy and Blood Meridien with the cowboys and old western themes and wondered what other books/authors were out there that are similar in style?
Larry Mc Murtry was writing fiction and screenplays for years when he wrote a "treatment" for a screenplay for a film that he thought would star John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and James Stewart. Everyone liked the treatment, but the film never got made, so he turned it into a novel called "Lonesome Dove" and it’s awfully good. In fact, it finally won him the Pulitzer prize for fiction.
If you like Cormac McCarthy and the Border Trilogy, then start with "Lonesome Dove" and continue with the (4 book) cycle.
Lonesome Dove
Streets of Laredo
Dead Man’s Walk Jornadao des Muertes)
Comanche Moon
