the hearts of horses by molly gloss

its a really cool book and it talks about this girl way back then and she broke horses for a living on the road. it talks about how she breaks horses gently and easy, and everyone else is really cruel when they break theire own horses.

its a good book, its a story line and everything, but thats like the main idea
References :
Read the Monty Roberts books. He gives a few descriptions as to how is father use to break horses.

I detest the methods used and hate the use of the words broke or break as it means breaking the horses spirit so it submits to you rather than the horse learning to accept you on the same level.

What they would do is tie the horse to a post with no food and water or shade until it becomes submissive. They also used to tie its legs up. They would throw on a saddle and bridle and ride the horse until it's too weak and tired to fight back.

The whole method is cruel and disgusting.
References :
well one way to break a horse in the old day was to tie them to a post in the middle of the arena..
i cant remember which movie maby lonesome dove they show this technique in the begining of the movie.

Actually tying a horse down to a post is still widely used alot of your old time cowboys who know how to do it still do. Infact last year a rancher held a demonstration. and NO they dont tye them down and give then no water food ETC they tie them to the post and saddle them and get on it keeps the horse centered in the arena. its not something i would do but if done correctly is a way to break a horse.
References :
Search the web for topics like "war bridle" or bronc busting.
Horse Heaven Hill by Zane Grey has some pretty awful stuff in it that is authentic.
References :
Adult only? There was a series I adored when i was younger, 'Jill and her Ponies' which fits the bill... if you don't mind an easy read. I would say aimed at 8-12.
References :
If you like the classics, then perhaps Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.
If not then maybe Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand
or
The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans

I think most things written by Dick Francis has horses in it. The only one I've read is Bolt, which is centered around a jockey.
References :
Dead Man's Walk, Commanche Moon and Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, read in that order.

"The Sweetest Gift" by Janet Mills

"The Wren" and "The Dove" by Kristy McCaffrey

I enjoyed Louis L'Amour's "Sacketts" series.
References :
http://www.janetmills.net/
